Ohio native, Hannah J., has been working at her local Massage Envy franchised location since 2014. Intent on pursuing her passion for skin care, Hannah attended a tech school to earn her cosmetology license while completing her junior and senior years of high school. Since earning her license, she's helped countless clients tackle their most pressing skin concerns. Her manager nominated her for Massage Envy's Esthetician of the Year award in 2018 for her exceptional skill and dedication. Hannah attended Massage Envy's Annual Franchise Conference in Orlando, Florida, as the Ohio region's nominee, for three days of workshops, hands-on training with Massage Envy's skin care brand partners, and leadership training.

When did you decide to pursue a career into skin care?
When I was a sophomore in high school, I knew I wanted to go into the beauty industry. At first, that meant doing makeup. I joined a career tech school my junior and senior years of high school to get my cosmetology license. Little did I know we would focus so heavily on hair! When we finally got to the skin care chapter, I fell in love with the science behind skin care. I was already working at a Massage Envy franchised location when I was a senior in high school, and that’s where I had my first professional facial. That facial helped me to start using professional skin care products to address my struggle with acne, and I wanted to be able to help other people in the same way.

What do you love most about working at your Massage Envy franchised location?
I especially love my franchised location because it’s in the town that I grew up in and my coworkers are my second family now. I have been able to work with the same estheticians and massage therapists for many years and I feel like we all grow together. Columbus is a very up-and-coming city in Ohio and it’s exciting that I can teach so many people about their skin.

What excites you about the next couple years of your career?
Massage Envy is changing in many ways. Facial services are being talked about more and they’re becoming more advanced. I’m most excited about all of the new products and services we can offer people to really make a difference in their lives. I love that we not only can help people relax for a period of time in their day, but moving forward we can help them achieve lasting results they haven’t experienced before.

When are you happiest at work?
I'm the happiest at work when I'm actively contributing to other people's lives. Sometimes clients come in not knowing what potential they have to change their lives with something as simple as a skin care service. It affects the mind, body and soul of a person when they are dedicating the time and effort to take care of themselves.

Why should somebody consider working at a Massage Envy franchised location and building their career there?
Someone should consider a career with a Massage Envy franchised location because you get the best support from your team. We have many classes on product knowledge, and the skincare brand reps are always accessible if you have questions. You get to work with high quality products and treatments in a controlled and safe environment with proper protocols in place. When you’re willing to put in the work, you always have support from your team so you don’t feel left behind.

How did you find out you won the esthetician of the year award and what was it like going to conference as an awardee?
I had no idea I was nominated by my clinic even though I had dreamed of receiving the award for years. My manager nonchalantly asked me how I liked Orlando, Florida and then said I would be going this year as Esthetician of the Year. I was over the moon and was holding back tears. My brother had recently passed and I felt like this was the best reward I could have received in the time I needed it most. Conference itself was an experience I will forever cherish. The hard work that everyone does behind the scenes to create such an amazing event was very admirable. The classes and speakers at conference were the biggest highlight for me. Not only was it exciting to discuss the products and services, but it was great to see the motivation behind being a true leader in our industry. I loved being able to learn and bring back everything I could for the estheticians in my location.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests outside of work?
My favorite hobbies outside of work are taking care of my new french bulldog puppy, hanging out with my friends, and actively participating in an organization I’ve been involved with for over five years to develop a dialogue and take action on what it means to accomplish world peace.
